The cast of The Next Generation is back
in the tenth film of the futuristic Star Trek series. Nemesis may
not have hit home for all, but it was a fun ride for me.
Star Trek: Nemesis has the same feel and predictability that most
Trek films have, but there was one shocking moment that caught me
off guard. I won’t ruin it for those of you who haven’t seen it
yet.
Patrick Stewart turns in another stellar performance as Captain
Picard. His cool calmness and the intensity in his eyes help sell
him as the man who must make some insane choices to save his crew.
His “Nemesis,” Shinzon (Tom Hardy), is the sinister parallel to
Picard, which is demonstrated by his plans to annihilate the
Enterprise.
Nearly the entire cast comes back to play their supporting roles,
and once again they all do it marvelously. We finally see a marriage
of two of the main crewmembers that should have happened during the
TV series. Brent Spiner, who stars as Data, once again does a
wonderful job as the gold skinned android. We don’t get to see too
much of Jonathan Frakes (Cmd. Riker) as we have in some of the
previous films, but his presence as “Number One” is still as
passionate as it ever was during the series and previous films. Of
course, I can’t forget Worf (Michael Dorn), Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis),
and Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) can I? Although, their roles were
down sized considerably, as the story focused on Picard, this could
not have been a TNG film without them.
Nemesis by far has one of the best and boldest space battles in
the series to date with tactical decisions so exciting and intense
that I found myself getting goosebumps. In short, this may not be
the best Trek film ever, but it definitely has some exciting moments
that will make me pick it up on DVD when it comes out.
With rumors flying that this will be the final mission for The
Next Generation crew we can say, at least, that they went out in
style. |
