Wild and spectacular are two words that
I would use to describe ‘The Mummy Returns’. This movie is devilishly
entertaining. I didn’t find myself bored or wishing this movie would end at
any time. Writer-director Stephen Sommers does a fantastic job re-investing
what made the first movie, ‘The Mummy’, so successful. He meshed together
action, comedy, and romance in such a way that it kept the movie appealing
throughout.
The original cast
returns in this amazing sequel along with a newcomer, Freddie Boath. Freddie
plays the O’Connells’ young adventurous son, Alex, who finds himself in
constant trouble. Brendan Fraser is back as the swash-buckling, yet reluctant,
hero. I must say that Fraser does a much better job in ‘The Mummy Returns’
than he did in the previous film.
We also see Rachel
Weisz back in her role as Evie who is now married to Rick O’Connell and has
a 9-year old boy with him. We don’t see Evie as the weak little librarian in
this one either. She’s tougher and more daring and even stars in a few of
her own fight scenes. John Hannah also reprises his role as Evie’s sniveling
older brother, Jonathan. ‘The Mummy Returns’ is an adequate title as,
Arnold Vosloo, who was the mummy in the first, is back for a second time
portraying the role of Im-Ho-Tep, who again
unleashes terror that the O’Connell’s must stop in order to save the
world.
In ‘The Mummy Returns’, however,
the mummy isn’t trying to resurrect Anck-Su-Namun. This time he is after the
army of the dead. For Im-Ho-Tep to get command of such a great army he must
destroy the Scorpion King. WWF superstar, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, plays
the Scorpion King. He does a fantastic job for the amount of time that he’s
actually in the movie. It doesn’t surprise me that they approached him to
take the lead in the prequel, Scorpion King, that’s due out later this year.
(I’ll be catching that one too).
If you were a fan of the first
‘Mummy’ I’m sure that you’ll enjoy the second one even more. I know I
did.
