I’m sure that it’s not a big surprise to anyone to see
that The Grinch is the number 1 movie of the weekend. I was very
excited when I heard that Jim Carrey would be playing The Grinch.
So I ventured off to the next big city over (Silver City – much better
than the local theatre) to catch this animated Christmas classic brought
to life.
Some other critics
seem to think that kids, or anyone else, will not enjoy this movie. Roger
Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times seems to think he understands children –
"I
think a lot of children are going to look at this movie with perplexity
and distaste." How many children out there even know what perplexity is?
Apparently Mr. Ebert once again thinks he knows what the public likes. The
theatre was jam packed with kids (and parents, and me & my wife)
who were sitting on the edge of their seat just waiting for what would
happen next.
Ron Howard, who has brought us other film favorites such as
Ransom, Apollo 13, Willow, and many more, directed this classic
children’s tale. Howard truly makes it fun for all ages.
We all know the story of the Grinch Who Stole Christmas. Who
hasn’t caught the cartoon on T.V. or read the book?! For those reasons
I’m going to stay away from the core story, even though there are
numerous additions to it. I know that I wouldn’t pay full price to see a
half hour live action Grinch.
Even though Dr. Suess said it himself "No one knows why the
Grinch hates Christmas" the writers Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman seem too. We
finally get an idea why the Grinch hates Christmas with such a passion.
After a run-in with the Grinch, little Cindy Lou is on a
quest to discover what makes the Grinch so grinchy. Although the citizens
of Whoville are scared and repulsed by the Grinch he wins the Holiday
Cheermeister award thanks to little Cindy Lou Who. During the ceremony he begins
to enjoy Christmas for the first time since he was a child until the mayor ruins Mr. Grinch's holiday cheer by reminding him of
the past. Once again bent on ruining Christmas for all he begins his devious plan.
Covered in fur and layers of make-up you can still make out
the quirkiness of Jim Carrey. Known for his expressive body language and
facial comedics, Carrey takes the Grinch to a whole new level.
We know that a movie cannot please all. For those of you are
fans of Jim Carrey, Ron Howard, and the Grinch go see it. I came out of
the theatre with a great ab workout, I laughed and laughed. You’ll
either love it or hate it.
